Are defensive midfielders now the most coveted players by Premier League sides?
Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante in action with Hull City’s Markus Henriksen
Reports in the Mirror state that Arsenal are lining up a summer move for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who has been in impressive form again this season.
No player has made more tackles (111) than Gueye so far this term, as he continues the fine displays that also made him Aston Villa’s standout player in 2015/16.
The newspaper suggests that the 27-year-old could be the Gunners’ own N’Golo Kante, who himself is the odds-on favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award this campaign.
If Kante does collect the individual prize, he will be the first defensively minded midfielder since Roy Keane in 2000 to pick up the gong.

Usually the award goes to an attacker and this recognition of the France international, plus the interest in Gueye, shows that enforcers are being recognised as an integral part of a successful side.
Forget tricks and skills, hardworking midfielders who break up the play and do the dirty work are the cool kids of the Premier League now.
