Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown does not seem to be too impressed with Tottenham Hotspur attacker Erik Lamela’s ‘self-indulgence’.

Tottenham Hotspur winger Erik Lamela scored one of the best goals anywhere in Europe on Thursday.

The Argentina international’s truly brilliant ‘rabona’ effort Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League Group C clash at White Hart Lane has been widely hailed.

It was a moment of pure genius which exhibited that, despite his well-documented struggles in English football, Lamela remains a truly talented footballer with loads of potential.

However, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown seems to be critical of the 22-year-old.

‘Fantastic skill,’ The Daily Mail quotes the Englishman as telling the BBC’s Football Focus. ‘I think that’s a major self-indulgence to do something like that. If it comes off then great but if it doesn’t…

‘And if you’re watching him play regularly he does overplay a little bit. But when he gets the balance right there’s definitely a special player there’.

Keown has a point. There have been occasions when players have attempted to do an audacious trick and failed to pull it off. However, just because the trick is difficult does not mean that a player should not try it.
