The Gunners’ consolation strike came from Alexis Sanchez, who later suffered what looks to be a serious injury.
Arsenal are now fighting to even finish in the top four, with the sides around them hoping to take full advantage of yet another slip.
A win for Manchester United this afternoon will take them above Arsene Wenger’s side for the first time in months and unless the Gunners turn things around it could be yet another campaign that fizzles out in the coming weeks.
One Arsenal player who continued to disappoint was forward Theo Walcott.
The England international played 65 minutes on Saturday before being replaced by Olivier Giroud but he did little to make a positive impact on the game.
