Juventus vs Porto in the Champions League was a match for the ages.

It was filled with goals and drama, and in the end the underdog prevailed as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus were dumped out of the competition.

However, despite the game being a fantastic tie, it still had its fair share of controversy, with Mehdi Taremi being sent off for kicking the ball away after the referee had blown his whistle.

Usually, instances of players kicking the ball away are punished with a yellow card due to time wasting concerns, but this came in just the 54th minute.

As you can imagine, there were plenty of upset Porto fans, but interestingly, Arsenal fans also had an issue with this decision.

Indeed, this whole situation was reminiscent of Robin van Persie’s infamous red card against Barcelona 10 years ago, and Gunners supporters were quick to empathise with Porto after this decision.

Van Persie was sent off for kicking the ball after the referee had blown his whistle in a Champions League tie in Barcelona, and his dismissal changed the course of the game and allowed the La Liga outfit to prevail.

Luckily, Porto didn’t have the same fate as they overcame Juventus on away goals, but this incident was still controversial, and Arsenal fans had a lot to say about it.
