Mohamed Elneny signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal today.

The 25-year-old joined the Gunners in a £7.4 million deal from Basel over two years ago but has struggled for first-team chances this season.

The Egypt midfielder has started only seven Premier League games, making nine appearances in that competition overall.

Elneny, who has played second fidde to Granit Xhaka in the Premier League, has mostly featured in Arsenal’s Europa League campaign, starting eight games for Arsene Wenger’s side in Europe’s secondary competition.

Wenger praised his 2016 signing via Arsenal’s official website today, saying that he has his best years ahead of him.

And many fans of the North London club agreed with the Frenchman’s sentiments on Elneny.

Elneny is by no means a poor footballer, but questions must be asked of him when he can’t displace Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder has been dreadful for Wenger’s side at regular points during the campaign, but the fact that the French manager has never once rotated Xhaka for Elneny in a Premier League game this season might betray his latest comments about the latter.
