It was a long time coming, but finally Thomas Vermaelen made his Barcelona debut this weekend, nine months after he signed from Arsenal in a £15million deal.
The 29-year-old has been blighted by injuries but he will now be hoping that is well and truly behind him, and his performance against Deportivo La Coruna suggested he could yet play a vital role for Barcelona next season and beyond.
When fit and on form, the Belgian international is a class act; the problem is it has been a long time since that has been the case.
In his 63 minutes on the pitch, the former Arsenal defender showed his class and composure and if he can have a good pre-season and string a run of matches together early next season he could still prove to be a very effective option despite Barcelona’s initial outlay.
