Arsenal ace Mesut Ozil wants the number 10 shirt.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere applauds fans after the game
Jack Wilshere may not be amused to hear quotes from Mesut Ozil this weekend indicating he wants to take the England midfielder’s squad number.
Wilshere was loaned out to Bournemouth last week so he can play regular football, after missing almost the entire season with injury in 2015/16.
Now he could lose the prestigious number 10 shirt at his club, if Ozil has anything to do with it at least.
Germany’s Mesut Ozil reacts
German international star Ozil, who currently wears the number 11 for Arsenal, told German newspaper Express: “It just went free, and I definitely want it,” when asked about the 10 shirt.
As Arsenal’s creative fulcrum, it is understandable Ozil wants a shirt number once worn by the great Dennis Bergkamp at the club.
It is also unfortunate that now Wilshere has been sent on loan, Arsenal won’t have a 10 playing for them this season, but Ozil’s comments are a little harsh, ruthless perhaps, when considering his pal has just left for the season.
Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in action
If Arsenal did hand Wilshere’s shirt over, it would be another boot up the backside for the England international, who is hoping to get his career back on track, but manager Arsene Wenger is loyal towards his players and may wish to keep it open to him, as a show of faith for when he returns.
There is one factor in Ozil’s favour, and that is his ongoing contract talks, and he could demand the shirt as a stipulation to signing a new deal.
