Arsenal suffered a shock defeat to Stoke City on Saturday, with Per Mertesacker coming in for criticism from the fans.
Arsenal went down 3-2 to Stoke City on Saturday and with the Gunners 3-0 down at one point it looked like being a complete humiliation.
Goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey restored some pride but Arsenal could not claw back the deficit inflicted by Peter Courch, Bojan Krkic and Jon Walters.
The damage was done in the first half with Arsenal’s defence coming under the spotlight once again, and with Laurent Koscielny only on the bench it was Per Mertesacker and Calum Chambers who were the victims of Mark Hughes’ men.
Mertesacker had a passing accuracy of 81 per cent but he failed to impose himself on the match, winning just five duels and only three aerial battles against a side who relish that kind of challenge.
| Passing Accuracy | Outfield Blocks | Interceptions Won | Duels Won | Aerials Won | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per Mertesacker | 81% | 0 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 90 |
With Koscielny absent it was up to the German international to lead the back-line but that did not happen, and when Chambers was sent off the capitulation was complete.
