Germany defeated England yesterday in a prestige international friendly. The 1-0 win in Dortmund was against the run of play, with England impressing at Signal Iduna Park.

The fixture was also Lukas Podolski’s final one for his nation.

He scored the winning goal in the game, his 49th goal in 130 caps for his nation and was given a hero’s goodbye by the Germany fans. To be fair, it was all a little much. You’d be forgiven for thinking Podolski was heading out to war given the way he was treated on the night, it teetered on embarrassing.

But there was nothing embarrassing about his goal, a thunderbolt from range with that trademark rocket of a left-foot.

Arsenal fans know it well. Podolski spent three seasons at the Emirates, but never truly reached his full potential during his time at Arsenal.

Despite that, he was a fan favourite. He was a popular and friendly face at the club and was always a player Arsenal fans wished the best for.

So despite England’s defeat, plenty of Arsenal fans were pleased for Poldi on his special night …
