Yaya Sanogo may not have lived up to his billing at Arsenal, but he did become something of a cult hero.

Arsene Wenger pounced to sign Sanogo from Auxerre in the summer of 2013, having smashed 11 goals in just 24 games for the French side.

Sanogo had already been a top prospect on Football Manager, which maybe created an unfair level of excitement around him among the Arsenal fanbase.

He only managed 20 first-team games for Arsenal, scoring just the once – though it was a huge goal as he scored against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Sanogo hit four goals in a 5-1 Emirates Cup win over Benfica, and these moments – coupled with being almost invisible for the rest of his time with Arsenal – turned him into something of a cult hero.

After loan spells at Crystal Palace, Ajax and Charlton Athletic, Arsenal released Sanogo in 2017, and he spent three years with Toulouse, bagging 16 goals in 72 games.

Sanogo was released last summer, and has only just returned to football having today signed a deal with Championship side Huddersfield Town until the end of the season.

Sanogo is back in English football, seeking to enjoy more success than he had with Arsenal, but at 28 the days of him being a hot young prospect are long gone.

Emile Smith Rowe excelled at Huddersfield last season, and maybe Sanogo can do the same; either way, Arsenal fans will likely keep an eye on his progress with the Championship club.
