Premier League duo Newcastle United and Arsenal are looking to sign a striker ‘better than Dusan Vlahovic’ in Napoli hotshot Victor Osimhen, Serie A legend Alessandro Altobelli tells Canale 8.

The raw statistics may suggest that Altobelli is more wide of the mark than one of Joelinton’s 20-yard shots – Vlahovic has scored nearly twice as many goals as Osimhen this season (13) – but some context is required here.

Osimhen has played ten games fewer than Juventus’ new number seven. He missed two months of action with a fractured cheekbone and, following a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan that threatened to bring a premature end to Napoli’s Scudetto chances, the former Lille striker breathed fresh life into their title hopes with a brilliantly-taken brace against Hellas Verona last weekend.

Arsenal came close to signing Osimhen before his move to Italy in 2020.

According to The Mirror, the spring-heeled 23-year-old is now one of the Gunners’ ‘top targets’ heading into next summer’s transfer window.

As it stands, none of the strikers who started the season at the Emirates will still be Arsenal players come July. A new centre-forward is a must.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal will face competition from Saudi-backed Newcastle. The Magpies reportedly offered a package worth a staggering £84 million in January and will try their luck again soon enough.

Is Victor Osimhen really better than Dusan Vlahovic?

“Osimhen is stronger than Vlahovic,” says Altobelli, who scored over 200 goals in a decade at Inter Milan.

“When I criticized the Nigerian (earlier in the season), he had only scored 4 goals. Now, (Napoli coach Luciano) Spalletti is working hard on him, forging him into one of the best strikers.

“On Sunday I was able to see his movement, as well as the goals. In this moment he is enjoying great growth. And, for me, he is better than Vlahovic.”

It is common knowledge that Arsenal missed out on Vlahovic before his January move to the Allianz Stadium. The Gunners agreed a fee with Fiorentina but the free-scoring Serb opted for Juventus instead.
