Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to extend Marcelo Flores‘ contract by two years, with the winger also set to remain in Spain for an extra year once the wonderkid has returned from Real Oviedo.

According to journalist Fernando Cevallos, the north London side have extended Flores’ contract at the club for an extra two years, keeping the playmaker at Arsenal until 2025 and ensuring the Gunners retain one of their most exciting talents.

Cevallos said about Flores’ future and Arsenal’s plan for the Mexican international: “What I can tell you is that he has renewed for two more years with Arsenal, they have extended his contract and the priority for Marcelo Flores will be to stay in Spain for another year.

“It does not mean that he is going to stay at Real Oviedo, Oviedo ends the loan in the summer and will sit down to see if there is a project for him here, but the priority is to stay in Spain, there are already a couple of teams interested in stay.”

Lauded as ‘fantastic’ by former Arsenal U-23 manager Kevin Betsy, Flores is widely regarded by Arsenal fans as one of their best youth prospects, with the versatile attacker currently spending the year in the Segunda Division with Oviedo, though minutes have been hard to come by since the turn of the year.

Despite this, the 19-year-old is expected to one day break into Arsenal’s first-team, with Flores already a part of the senior Mexico senior set-up, where the winger made his debut for the North American giants before even appearing for the Gunners’ U-23s, which is why this contract news is so significant.

Flores might not have featured for Oviedo in 2023, but there’s still a lot of excitement around the Arsenal winger, who looks set for another loan spell in Spain ahead of next season, where Mikel Arteta will certainly be keeping an eye of the attacking playmaker.

Indeed, Flores is just one of many Hale End products who could soon become first-team players for Arsenal, and with the forward now signing a new contract, the north London side can now begin their new long-term plan for Canadian born talent.
