Edu is getting a lot of love at Arsenal right now – and rightly so.

The Gunners are top of the Premier League standings and many of his signings have helped transform the North Londoners.

Mikel Arteta obviously knew people like Gabriel Jesus from his time at Manchester City, but Edu also had a professional relationship with the player stemming from his work with Brazil’s national side.

And it’s fair to say that he would’ve also played a part in bringing the £45 million hitman to the Emirates, with Jesus helping Arsenal to the summit of the standings after nine games.

However, Edu almost got one signing very wrong, only for the North Londoners’ hierarchy to cancel the transfer.

According to The Athletic earlier in 2022, he was working hard to bring Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus, only for the North London outfit’s hierarchy to veto the deal.

And that looks a very lucky escape because now Arthur is a Premier League player and, well, it really isn’t going well.

The 26-year-old has only managed 13 minutes of senior football since joining Liverpool on a season-long loan from the Italian outfit on transfer deadline day this past summer.

And even worse, The Athletic reported on Saturday that the Brazilian midfielder – a £63 million signing by Juve in 2020 – is now out for four months with an injury.

Of course, it’s possible that he would’ve had better fortune had he joined Arsenal, but there are clearly fitness problems with the South American and fortunately for Edu, he was overruled in trying to sign the player.
