Arsenal boss Unai Emery has told Football London that he held a positive conversation with Mesut Ozil yesterday morning.

Emery has consistently overlooked Ozil throughout the season so far, but the German midfielder looks set to start for Arsenal later this evening against Liverpool.

Ozil could even wear the armband for Arsenal at Anfield, with Granit Xhaka set to miss out.

And Emery said: “We had this morning a very good conversation, Mesut and I. I said to him my idea with him hasn’t changed. He knows what I want with him.

“It’s the same last year, the first day of pre-season training here and one conversation between me and him. It’s the same one month ago and in that way some circumstances didn’t help us to be in every moment consistent or available to play.

“The last weeks he was progressively training well, adding his spirit to help us. That conversation this morning is because I wanted to listen to him, how he’s thinking now to help us and be with us tomorrow.”

Emery has wanted Ozil to work harder defensive during his time at Arsenal, but his continued decision to overlook the playmaker has caused frustration from some sections of the Emirates Stadium crowd.

Arsenal have not always been at their creative best this season, and there is a feeling that Ozil’s inclusion would make the Gunners more of an attacking threat.

Ozil will have a chance to a stake his claim for a more regular spot this evening, when he will be looking to catch the eye against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in domestic competition this term, but are set to rotate their side later, which may give Arsenal confidence that they can pick up a victory on Merseyside.
