It’s no secret that Arsenal are interested in a creative midfielder this January.
That’s because despite an upturn in fortunes over the past four days, the Gunners, who have won their last two Premier League games, are having a shocking domestic season.
Mikel Arteta’s side are 13th in the table after scoring only 16 goals in 16 Premier League games.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang only scoring twice from open play in that competition this season, the Emirates Stadium side absolutely need a midfield spark.
And that might come from Leipzig and Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, if Arsenal have their way.
According to French journalist Juliens Laurens, speaking on his podcast with Gabriele Marcotti, the North Londoners are ‘very keen’ on the 26-year-old.
He said: “There is another club [interested in Sabitzer], I think Arsenal are very keen as well. I think there’s a few English clubs [interested]. He would be a great signing, potentially quite cheap as well for the kind of player that you’re getting. It’s a no-brainer.”
Sabitzer is earning £105,000 per week in Germany and it’s difficult for Arsenal to sanction any high-profile players’ transfers in January until there’s clarity over Mesut Ozil.
The Germany international is taking home £350,000 per week by the Gunners despite having not kicked a ball for them since March.
And although he is finally out of contract in the summer of 2021, Arsenal will be down almost another £10 million in wages at that point.
