Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could be in the market for a new striker in January – and one of their alleged targets is a free agent.

Mundo Deportivo reported last week that Tottenham are keen on signing Diego Costa, seeking a reunion with Jose Mourinho.

AS added on Monday that Arsenal also want Costa, branding them ‘very attentive’ to the situation surrounding his future.

Now, there has been a big update; Atletico have today confirmed that Costa has left the club, terminating his contract with immediate effect.

Costa’s contract with Atletico was set to expire at the end of the season anyway, but his deal has been ripped up months earlier than planned.

The 32-year-old was a star under Mourinho at Chelsea, smashing 21 goals in 37 games in their first season together, with their styles meshing perfectly.

Costa loved to be hated, with his aggressive approach fitting in well with Mourinho’s style of play, so a Tottenham reunion on a free transfer may make some sense.

Carlos Vinicius is only on loan, though Costa has only scored 19 goals in 81 games for Atletico since re-signing in 2017, meaning he isn’t quite the player he was.

Arsenal have been crossing the ball much more under Mikel Arteta, so adding a target man like Costa – without breaking the bank – could add up.

Still, Costa is declining as a force, and even though he is now available, both Arsenal and Spurs need to be careful in terms of wages and contract length.
