Arsenal and Newcastle are among the clubs reportedly keeping tabs on Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford. But speaking in 2019, Michael Owen thinks he will always lack the killer instinct of Harry Kane.

Rashford, 24, was left on the bench in Sunday’s Manchester derby despite the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani. Ralf Rangnick chose to start Anthony Elanga – and it has seen Rashford consider his future.

90Min report that Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham are keeping tabs on the 46-time England star ahead of a potential summer move. He could cost a cut-price fee, given his contract at Old Trafford expires in June 2023.

Back in 2019, Owen was quoted by The Mirror as saying that while Rashford has solid, all-round qualities, he will lack the “killer instinct” that the likes of Tottenham star Kane and Sergio Aguero boast.

“I don’t think he is obsessed with goals,” Owen said, in 2019. “He is a better all round player than me, he has a great touch and all round skill that I never had, but he hasn’t got the killer instinct that I had.

“I was just obsessed. I just don’t think scoring goals is what he goes to bed craving. Players like Robbie Fowler, Aguero or Harry Kane these people who are obsessed with goals. I don’t think he is obsessed with goals.”

Owen on Rashford: Arsenal, West Ham or Newcastle for England ace?

Arsenal desperately need a striker. Alexandre Lacazette remains out of contract and while he could extend his deal, he is yet to do so. Eddie Nketiah looks more than likely to leave The Emirates come June.

Newcastle have Chris Wood and Callum Wilson, but Rashford would certainly be an improvement. West Ham only boast Michail Antonio up top, who turns 32 this month. Depth, and an eventual replacement is needed.

So, which club is best? If he can accept the Arsenal, Manchester United rivalry then a move to the Emirates is best – especially with the Gunners in the top four. But financially, Newcastle would certainly tempt him.
