Paris Saint-Germain have hit the buffers in their attempts to sign Arsenal and Everton target Joaquin Correa from Lazio, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

Even a PSG side bankrolled by Qatari billionaires aren’t having it easy in this covid-hit world.

Scrimping and saving, and making do and mending is the order of the day in European football and Les Parisiens aren’t immune from a situation that has everyone scouring the back of the sofa for a penny or two.

In fact, even before the pandemic took a sledgehammer to the revenue stream of every club in European football the Ligue 1 giants had been forced to shelve their big-spending ways.

Operating under the watchful gaze of Financial Fair Play, PSG have to sell before they can buy these days.

And that is why talks to bring Argentina international Correa to the Parc des Princes have ground to a shuddering halt.

According to TMW, PSG need to find a buyer for Julian Draxler or Angel Di Maria to free up funds for the former Sevilla schemer. Doing so, however, will be easier said than done.

Draxler signed a three-year contract only a few weeks ago and his reputation is hardly what it was, having been left out of Germany’s Euro 2020 squad.

And, for all his evergreen brilliance, it’s hard to imagine anyone matching the £250,000-a-week wages the 33-year-old Di Maria takes home in Paris.

If you listen closely you can just about hear a faint creaking noise, the sound of a door opening for Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.

Reports coming out of Italy have suggested Correa, who asked to leave Lazio recently, is a target for three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Arsenal have offered £17 million already. Far less than the £30 million Lazio want, of course, but Mikel Arteta has a trick up his sleeve in the shape of Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguayan midfielder is closing in on a dream move to the Stadio Olimpico and could be used as a makeweight in a player-plus-cash deal that would drive down Correa’s price tag to a more affordable level.

And, with neither Di Maria nor Draxler likely to leave PSG any time soon, the task Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton face has just become ever so slightly easier.
