Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been lavishing praise upon Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming that he’s arguably the best right-back in the world.
Ferdinand was joining Joe Cole and Glenn Hoddle in debating their England squads for the upcoming European Championships, and as ever, Alexander-Arnold’s selection was a point of debate.
Cole says that Alexander-Arnold has looked back to his best in recent weeks, while Ferdinand maintains that he’s been arguably the best right-back in the world in recent years.
“The big talking point is Trent Alexander-Arnold, the last two years he’s been arguably the best right-back in the world, but you want to start Reece James,” Ferdinand said.
Joe Cole also gave his view on the defender, saying:
“It’s interesting what he’s done with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Three months ago he would have been one of the first names in the squad, and Gareth reportedly gave him a call saying you need to up your game because he was off form, and he’s come back and been brilliant the last few weeks.”
We can’t argue with any of that.
Alexander-Arnold may have had an off-season, but let’s be fair, he’s still been better than most full-backs could ever dream of being.
He’s been something of a victim of his own success. Yes, he’s failed to live up to the insane bar that he’s set, but he’s still amongst the best right-backs in the Premier League right now.
Whether or not he goes to the Euros remains to be seen, but if he doesn’t Gareth Southgate could be about to make a huge mistake.
