Areola, Cairney, Dost – Three former targets Newcastle could return to after reported takeover

Newcastle United need signings in January and a reported takeover could see them return to targets that were previously too pricey.

Newcastle United were hindered by a lack of funds in the summer transfer window, heading into the season with uninspiring options in three key positions – in goal, an attacking midfield role and up front.

But those troubles could soon come to an end, with Arab News reporting this week that Amanda Staveley could complete a takeover of the club – backed by Gulf investors – by the end of the year.

If the new ownership is open to investment, Newcastle could certainly use reinforcements in January; here are three former targets they should look at again.

Alphonse Areola

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has again been linked with Newcastle in recent days as France Football’s report claims he is frustrated by interest in other players in his position at the Ligue 1 club.

Areola responded on Twitter, however, saying, “Rumours about my future are totally unfounded.”

But there may no longer be room for the 24-year-old at PSG and Newcastle would be wise to take another look, with Rob Elliot culpable for numerous goals in the opening weeks of this campaign.

Tom Cairney

Having twice torn apart Rafa Benitez’s side in the Championship last term, Newcastle were understandably credited with an interest in Fulham’s Tom Cairney – as per the Telegraph.

But Cairney, presumably keen to earn promotion with his current club, instead signed a new contract at Craven Cottage.

Fulham’s early form has not been altogether convincing this term, though, sitting three points off the play-off places – after injuries to numerous stars, including Cairney – and they could potentially be vulnerable to bids for their star man.

Bas Dost

Netherlands international Bas Dost has consistently been linked with Newcastle in recent years, although the Chronicle reported that Benitez’s men were not willing to make a big bid for the forward in the summer.

However, with increased funds, that could well change; the Magpies are desperate for a new forward as Joselu struggles.

Dost scored 36 goals in all competitions for Sporting CP last season, has five already this term, and – crucially – he offers the type of physical presence that Newcastle’s system depends on.
