‘Are you listening Karren Brady?’ Shrewsbury fans deliver scathing verdict on West Ham’s London Stadium

West Ham United edged past League One Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup in midweek.

West Ham have turned a corner under David Moyes and have lifted themselves out of the relegation zone and into midtable in an increasingly congested Premier League.

A much changed Hammers side including a number of young players were taken to a replay and extra-time before Reece Burke’s thumping strike settled a tie against an impressive Shrewsbury.

The Hammers left their beloved Boleyn Ground home of 112 years to move to the London Stadium in nearby Stratford in 2016, which was spearheaded by vice-chairman Karren Brady.

The move was meant to propel the East Londoners to a new level where they could compete with the Premier League elite.

The reality has been very different, though, with a series of issues blighting the club’s first two seasons at the ground on and off the pitch.

Many West Ham fans have not been happy with the move for a variety of reasons, none more so than the distance between the stands and the pitch and its impact on the atmosphere and match experience.

Supporters also feel there have been broken promises over the “state of the art retractable seating solution” that was promised when the club was selling the move to sceptical fans.

In reality they ended up with a complex relocatable scaffolding much to the anger of supporters who have accused Brady and the club’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold of lying to them.

When West Ham first moved to the London Stadium Brady declared the move to be ‘the most successful stadium migration in football history’… before a ball had even been kicked.

But the ground has been slated by Hammers fans and visiting supporters ever since.

And even League One Shrewsbury were not impressed with fans describing the experience as ‘shocking’.

“After going to the stadium to take in the @EmiratesFACup replay, I totally get it now, what a shocking place to watch football….SO FAR AWAY which creates such a disconnect with the team, anyway it was nice to experience it but I wouldn’t want to watch my footy there!”
