The lack of investment in Rangers’ squad has contributed to their stuttering season.
It’s fair to say Derek Llambias was not the most universally popular figure at Rangers due to his close connections with Sports Direct supremo Mike Ashley but, as reported by the Daily Record, the former chief executive may have endeared himself to the fans somewhat by asking a question that is one everybody’s lips – where is the money?
As it stands, Rangers are as close to St Johnstone in fifth as they are to Aberdeen in second with academy coach Graeme Murty forced to take the reins after the sudden yet hardly unexpected departure of Mark Warburton earlier in the month.
Yet, while the former Brentford boss may have divided supporters by virtue of his rigid playing style and questionably man-management, he can hardly be forced to take the entirety of the blame for the club’s baffling recruitment policy.
Yes, Warburton overspent badly on Joe Garner (below) but the huge number of free signings and short-term loans merely highlighted the fact that his arms were tied tightly behind his back by chairman Dave King.
“[When I was voted off the board in place of King, below] I asked ‘where was the money? Where was the cash?” Llambias said in quotes reported by the Daily Record. “There was no money and we’re two years on and it’s exactly the same. Where is the money?
“To be honest with you, the club has got great history, wonderful traditions and they just need somebody with a lot of money behind it who are going to produce the goods.”
Without serious investment in the playing squad, Rangers appear light years away from closing the gap between themselves and runaway leaders Celtic.
