Robin Lod is a man in demand with Championship duo Wolves and Bristol City both keen.
Wolves have the money and the connections to blow the Championship away in the January transfer window. But just because they are bankrolled by one of the world’s richest conglomerates does not mean they are going to ignore good value.
The Bristol Post claimed on Monday that Wolves are fighting Bristol City to land Finland international midfielder Robin Lod. He is currently plying his trade with Panathinaikos but it is understood that his contract expires in the summer and he is showing little interest in signing a new one.
As such, with the Greek giants struggling financially, they could accept an offer of just £440,000. But where would Lod fit in at Molineux?
The 24-year-old, who has won 20 caps for his country, is a midfielder by trade but can also play out on the wings if required. Though these are two areas of Wolves’ squad where they are not exactly short of quality.
In fact, Wolves’ spine is so strong that Alfred N’Diaye, who played for La Liga high-flyers Villarreal in the Europa League last season, has been restricted to a substitute role in recent weeks.
And Wolves aren’t lacking quality widemen either with the stunning form of Diogo Jota and Ivan Cavaleiro meaning last season’s Player of the Year, Helder Costa (below), is no longer the first-name on the team-sheet.
In that sense, a move to a Bristol City side who are performing above expectations yet lacking the same star quality might give Lod a better chance of regular game time in his first season in English football.
But with Wolves perfectly placed to cruise to promotion, the prospect of Premier League football at Molineux in just a few months’ time could give Nuno Espirito Santo’s fearsome side the edge over their rivals in the transfer market.
