Just six games into the Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur face a reality they wanted to avoid. Their title challenge may be over already.

Tottenham have won only two games out of six, and sit in seventh place. They are 10 points off a relentless Liverpool, and five behind Manchester City.

Mathematically of course its still possible for Spurs to get back into the race, but its not likely.

Tottenham’s indifferent form is not just a few games this season, its been a problem all of 2019.

Tottenham spent big this summer to try and avoid this, investing a record fee in Tanguy Ndombele. Money was spent on Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso, who are yet to contribute due to injury.

So Spurs have had a bit of bad luck so far, but there seem to be some deeper issues too.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino does not appear to know his best defensive line up, or his best midfield.

Liverpool’s form at the top means that while Spurs drop points in the process of working all this out, they are losing more and more ground.

Last season Tottenham finished more than 30 points off title winners Manchester City, and had to scrap to finish in fourth place.

This season it is looking like Spurs are in for a repeat of this scenario, destined to battle for a top four place rather than a title spot.

Fans, manager and the board had gone into the season hoping Spurs would at least mount a challenge, and pull away from the chasing pack and move into the City and Liverpool stratosphere.

The reality is that there just hasn’t been an improvement so far to suggest they are capable of doing that yet.
