According to a report from the Sun, Chelsea are lining up a £70m January bid for Real Madrid ace Isco, in news that will be a real blow to Tottenham’s hopes of signing the play-maker.
The 26-year-old has come under fire for his performances for Los Blancos this season, and his future in the Spanish capital is shrouded in doubt.
The Sun claimed earlier this year that Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal were all keen on signing Isco, but it now seems as if the Blues have stolen a march on their London rivals in the race for the Spaniard’s signature.
Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders at Spurs, and they are now widely considered to be genuine challengers for major honours on all fronts.
It could be argued, however, that the Argentine needs to add further quality to his ranks, if Tottenham are to end their 10-year wait for a trophy.
And Isco would have been just the ticket.
With the Sun reporting that Chelsea are prepared to lay out £70 million on the Spain international, though, Spurs’ hopes seem to be over.
There is no way that the Lilywhites would splash out that kind of cash on a single player at the moment, what with their expensive new stadium move.
Missing out on a key target to their fierce rivals would be a bitter pill to swallow for Spurs, and he could be a player who comes back to haunt the north London outfit somewhere down the line.
