According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham Hotspur have turned down the chance to take Marcelo Brozovic in part-exchange for Moussa Sissoko, but is manager Mauricio Pochettino right to turn his back on the Croatian international?

After all, Sissoko has been a disappointment since completing his deadline day move to Tottenham from Newcastle United this time last year and, with little chance of playing regularly, it would make sense to move him on.

While Spurs understandably want to recoup as much of their £30million outlay as possible, even if the North London club are paying the Magpies back in smaller installments, they may have to accept that a straight cash offer for the 28-year-old is not going to suit their needs.

Tottenham paid over the odds for Sissoko and he has done nothing to justify that since. As a consequence they may be better off waving goodbye and welcoming a quality player in his place, even if it means missing out on a few million.

After all, Tottenham need strength in depth as they bid to mount another title challenge while also making it further in the Champions League.

Brozovic can help in that regard, with the 24-year-old yet to reach his peak and more than capable in front of goal.

The central midfielder has scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in 80 appearances for Inter and previously managed 13 goals and 15 assists in 96 games for Dinamo Zagreb.

It may be too much to suggest Tottenham would be grabbing the next Luka Modric just because of his nationality, but there is no doubt Brozovic has the innate talent to bring something to a Spurs side in need of late reinforcements.

Selling Sissoko would leave Tottenham’s bank balance healthier but their playing squad even thinner; so why not take Brozovic and kill two birds with one stone?
