Are Tottenham Hotspur preparing a big bid for Tim Krul in the summer?

The Newcastle United stopper could be heading to White Hart Lane if reports are to be believed.

On the face of it such a bid would make perfect sense.

While 40-year-old Brad Friedel has been one of the signings of the season for Tottenham, his age dictates he will not be able to carry on forever.

So it stands to reason that third-placed Tottenham will be in the market for a young, talented, goalkeeper, and who better than Tim Krul?

Krul is a full international for Holland, and has been one of the best goalkeepers in this season’s Premier League.

Newcastle have had a terrific season, but the gulf between the two sides was evident for all to see when Tottenham’s attackers put five past him at White Hart Lane two weekends ago.

Reports have suggested that Tottenham are preparing a £15 million bid, but we don’t believe this will be enough to seal his signature.

For a goalkeeper who has around 15 years ahead of him at the top level, Newcastle will want more.

Don’t forget this is a club who demanded, and received, £35 million for Andy Carroll, and are reported to want around £18 million for the signature of Cheik Tiote.

So Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will have to find some extra money, we believe Mike Ashley will want more than £20 million for the stopper.

Don’t rule out Newcastle selling either. Fans may not want to hear it, but Ashley has proven he has no problem making unpopular decisions.

So is Krul the man for Spurs?

There are few goalkeepers at the age of 23 rated as better prospects, especially ones proven in the Premier League.

Friedel will be able to carry on for another year, but if Tottenham want to get Krul now, they may not want to hang around.

They could even throw Heurelho Gomes into the deal as a sweetener, that is if Newcastle would want him.

But Spurs also have other issues to consider, namely who will be their manager next season, will they be able to keep Redknapp?

And what of a £30 million plus bid for Eden Hazard, would that allow sufficient funds to bid for Krul?

Even if these two players were signed, would enough money be available to strengthen the centre of defence?

We think the club will test the waters, but Newcastle fans will want their club to do all they can to resist selling their star goalkeeper.
