Are Tottenham Hotspur now Chris Smalling’s only viable option this summer?

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been linked with Everton and West Ham United, but Tottenham Hotspur have an edge.

According to the Daily Mail, Chris Smalling will only leave Manchester United for a club in the Champions League – and that could make Tottenham Hotspur his only viable option.

Smalling has been linked with West Ham United and Everton so far this summer, by the Daily Express.

However, neither West Ham nor Everton can offer Smalling the Champions League football that the centre-back craves.

Indeed, Spurs are the only interested party who can give Smalling a chance to perform on Europe’s elite stage.

Manchester City and Chelsea both seem unlikely buyers of the England international, meaning Tottenham may have a clear run to sign Smalling, if they want him – as The Sun say they do.

United are said to be willing to sell Smalling this summer for a fee of around £15 million by the Daily Telegraph.

If Smalling did move to Spurs, he would strengthen Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive options considerably.

Pochettino is known to want to add another centre-back, as the Argentine boss often operates with a system which incorporates three central defenders at Spurs.
