As Danny Rose struggles on and off the pitch for Tottenham is that simply playing into the hands of Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand during a World Cup year?

Danny Rose was one of several Tottenham Hotspur players that looked off the pace as they lost 2-1 at Leicester City in the Premier League.

The defeat at the King Power Stadium was only Rose’s fifth appearance for Spurs this season since being reintroduced back into the team following a knee injury.

However, while the left-back’s sharpness on the pitch can be improved with game time, behind the scenes there are reported to be further problems brewing.

Rose’s lack of minutes hasn’t been entirely down to fitness, with the 27-year-old having also been left out of games by manager Mauricio Pochettino as the Manchester Evening News reports Manchester United are closing in on a deal for the defender.

This comes after the England international admitted he was “fuming” because of being omitted from the starting XI for the recent 2-0 North London derby defeat to Arsenal, while over the summer the full-back caused even more controversy when he criticised Tottenham’s transfer policy and wage structure during an interview with the Sun.

All of this has hindered Rose’s development after being named in the PFA team of the year in 2016/17 and for Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand, it is playing right into his hands ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Bertrand currently represents the biggest competition for a place on the left side of defence for the Three Lions and has started eight of the nation’s last ten matches.

As Rose continues to have issues both on and off the field all the Saints star needs to do is continue to put in decent performances and he will surely permanently move ahead in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.
