Antony Mendez has told Foot Mercato that clubs are showing an interest in Seko Fofana, amid reports linking the RC Lens star with Newcastle, Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille.

The midfielder is enjoying a sublime season so far under Franck Haise at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. Fofana has scored five goals over 19 Ligue 1 outings, and has also fired home twice over two Coupe de France ties. He has even captained the side in 15 of his outings, as well.

Fofana has performed at all levels in the French top-flight this term, too. His strikes include goals against basement boys Saint-Etienne in August and runaway leaders PSG last month.

Without Fofana, Lens would have five fewer points having scored in five Ligue 1 draws. His hits were decisive against Rennes, Saint-Etienne, Lorient, Clermont Foot and PSG, as well.

The 26-year-old’s cup brace against Lille also took the fourth-round tie to penalties, having trailed 2-0. Fofana fired his second in the 95th-minute and also scored the winning penalty.

Newcastle among Fofana admirers after stunning Lens form

Newcastle are among Fofana’s admirers having observed his Lens performances before the January transfer sales, per Foot Mercato. Marseille, Atalanta and AC Milan have also kept a close eye on his displays. But Les Sang et Or have no appetite to sell the Ivorian this month.

Lens do not need the money potentially on offer for their €10m (£8m) signing, either. He is also a fans’ favourite at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis and feels very attached to the club.

Agent confirms transfer interest in Fofana

Fofana’s agent, Mendez, has now confirmed that clubs are showing an interest in the Lens star, however, and that it would be natural for the Newcastle transfer target to leave soon.

Additionally, Mendez notes Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain know Fofana’s profile well. But he is under contract until 2024 on the terms agreed upon joining from Udinese in 2020.

“My answer is simple,” Mendez said. “Seko is under contract with RC Lens until June 2024. There are requests, but also the demands of his club. Regarding PSG or OM, they are two big French clubs. PSG has a quality staff and at OM, it’s the same thing.

“They know Seko’s profile very well. If Seko has to go to a French club scheduled for European competitions or to a large foreign club, that will happen naturally.

“It is the logical continuation, he is ambitious. But he can also choose to extend the Lensoise adventure because he feels good there, he is happy and fulfilled.”
