Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen to bring Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay to Ibrox on loan.

McTominay appears set for a bright future at Old Trafford, having recently shone in a Champions League win over Benfica, so there is certainly an argument that he would be a good signing for the Gers.

However, considering that the 20-year-old’s future is clearly with Manchester United, it has surely got to be questioned whether he would actually be a smart signing for Rangers in January.
Though obviously mathematically possible, it appears that the Gers will not be challenging for the Scottish Premiership title this season with Celtic well clear at the top of the table, and with a new manager set to come through the door, a transitional period is surely inevitable.

Therefore, even if McTominay makes it into Rangers’ strongest lineup right now, it surely makes more sense for the Gers to focus on the players who could well be at Ibrox for the long-term – the academy prospects showing promise as well as the first-team regulars contracted to the club for the next few years – rather than pursue a short-term deal for a player who will surely not improve their title hopes that much.
Giving the likes of Jamie Barjonas, and Jordan Rossiter perhaps, the chances that the Gers are thinking about handing Scott McTominay from January may potentially see Rangers fall slightly further off the pace in the top flight, but it will surely be more beneficial to their hopes of putting up a better challenge next season – so it is surely difficult to justify why McTominay should be on Rangers’ radar.
