Glasgow Rangers will reportedly not be handing the experienced centre-back a new deal, but is it the right move regardless of his age?

As reported by Sky Sports, veteran centre-back Clint Hill is to leave Rangers at the end of the season, but is Gers manager Pedro Caixinha getting rid of the wrong defender?

Hill may be 38, but he has still been one of Rangers’ best players this season, racking up 30 appearances and scoring an impressive six goals in the process.

Hill is certainly not getting any younger, but David Weir proved age is just a number in Scottish football and the former Queens Park Rangers stalwart has performed far better than Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson this season.

Caixinha will have his own ideas when it comes to his playing squad. However Hill would surely have signed a one-year contract extension if he had the chance, even if he knew he would not be playing 90 minutes week in, week out.

His experience would have continued to help the likes of David Bates and, until Rangers succeed in bringing in quality additions this summer, Hill is arguably the best defender on their books.

That is telling in itself, and Caixinha will no doubt want to bring in far younger players for key positions at Ibrox, but one wonders if he has been too hasty with Hill.

After all, he could have been just as important off the pitch as he has been on it.
