Rangers could be making a huge error in selling Barrie McKay.

The Daily Record report Rangers are considering selling attacking midfielder Barrie McKay, valuing him at just £2 million.

If Rangers do indeed cash in on the Scottish starlet for that cheap figure, it could be a colossal mistake for the club’s efforts to rebuild.

McKay has been in the Rangers first team since 2012, and is more than just a footballer to them.

In a club which has struggled to find it’s identity since their liquidation and slow rebuild, McKay has been a constant.

The winger is in his first season in the Scottish Premiership, and just because it has not all gone to plan, Rangers should not necessarily be looking to sell.

McKay’s contract is up next summer and Rangers are yet to tie him down, but he is worth taking a gamble on and risking losing for free.

If they start moving in the right direction and bringing in big name players, it will be hard for McKay to walk away.

Just in January he insisted, to The Mail: “I am happy at Rangers and I am happy to stay.”

McKay is a player with considerable potential to improve, and is still just 22.

His semi-final goal last season against Celtic will live long in the memory, and manager Pedro Caixinha needs to work with him to coax more moments of magic like that out of him.

Players like McKay who have come through the academy to make an impact at first team level are not easy to find.

£2 million can be accrued elsewhere. Rangers would quickly spend it. They won’t get McKay back easily if they cash in.
