Nottingham Forest beat Championship rivals Sunderland to Hibernian starlet Jason Cummings in the summer transfer window.
Jason Cummings arrived at Nottingham Forest this summer amid high expectations. The striker had scored goals for fun at Hibernian north of the border and became the club’s first player in over 50 years to break the 20-goal barrier for three straight seasons in 2016/17.
Flash forward to mid-December, however, and the 22-year-old clearly hasn’t made the impact required. He has scored once in 12 Championship games and has not made a single league appearance since a four-minute cameo in a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City exactly a month ago.
And as well as a goalkeeper, a left sided centre-back and a dynamic midfielder, the Nottingham Post claims that a striker is on Forest’s wish list ahead of the January transfer window.
You can see why. Cummings is clearly a talented player with a lot of potential and, as demonstrated in his two-goal performance against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup, is blessed with a natural-born poacher’s instinct.
Manager Mark Warburton clearly does not believe Cummings is ready for life in England’s second tier, however, with a proven Championship goalscorer clearly needed at a Forest side who have not been quite as prolific as many had expected this season.
Championship rivals Sunderland, then, can breathe a sigh of relief. According to the Northern Echo, The Black Cats were preparing a bid for the Hibs starlet during the latter days of David Moyes’ ill-fated reign with the Scottish manager making frequent trips to watch Cummings in action north of the border.
And while Sunderland have struggled for goals this season, apart from loanee Lewis Grabban anyway, there is little reason to suggest Cummings would not have been just another signing who promised much but delivered little.
