Mikel Arteta’s chances of landing the Newcastle United job may be increasing by the day, as more and more candidates drop out of contention.

Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard have already told Newcastle they won’t take the job, as reported by the Express.

The latest report in The Times also suggests that Roberto Martinez wants to stay with Belgium, ruling him out as a potential candidate for Newcastle.

It means that the Magpies list of potential replacements for Rafael Benitez is narrowing, and it may be that Mikel Arteta is now the leading candidate to takeover at St. James’ Park.

The Daily Star have suggested that Arteta would be keen to take over at Newcastle, and with many of his rivals dropping out of the running, he may get his wish in the near future.
