Leeds United have a brilliant squad at their disposal, but so do a lot of their promotion rivals.

Leeds United’s summer transfer business looked to have given them a squad capable of finally earning promotion back to the top flight this season. And on early evidence a top-six finish seemed the least they could hope for, as they won match after match with some fine displays of attacking intent.

Unfortunately for Leeds, they have now hit the first bump in the road, with three defeats in their last three away matches raising serious questions over their ability to play against more physical sides. And on recent evidence there could be a case for the Whites to count themselves unlucky.

After all, just as Leeds built a squad that looks capable of mounting a promotion push, some of their Championship rivals are looking better than ever.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are the obvious example, but Cardiff City are another case in point, while Aston Villa’s resurgence suggests they will be there or thereabouts come May.

There is no doubt this is the best Leeds squad they have had in years and they should have enough to ensure a play-off spot at the very least.

But this is not a division where one or two sides are going to run away with it, as Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion looked to do last time out.

Now there are a number of clubs with squads capable of getting to the Premier League and then staying there, and Leeds are just one of them, which means team selection is vital week in, week out, rotating to ensure the opposition are bested more often than not.
