Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald put in a disastrous performance against Sheffield Wednesday as the club slipped to a second successive defeat.
It has led to fans calling for the German to be dropped, with many supporters even expressing the same sentiments before the fixture.
But as Leeds consider his immediate future, they have to look at the long term repercussions for the German too.
If Leeds drop him now, there is a chance his confidence will never recover.
Leeds need only look at similar situations at Aston Villa and Newcastle United to see that there could be no way back for Wiedwald if they ditch him.
Last summer Villa signed Italian goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini. He lasted just a handful of games before Roberto di Matteo was sacked.
He has subsequently been sent on an 18 month loan to Atalanta and is unlikely to ever play at Villa Park again.
Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez acted similarly harshly towards Matz Sels, with the Belgian failing to adapt.
He was sent to play with the under-23s in the second half of the season and is now on loan at Anderlecht.
Questions Leeds must consider now is whether Thomas Christiansen is ready to adopt a similarly ruthless approach.
It could mean there is no way back for Wiedwald, and this would mean Leeds writing of the £500,000 fee they spent on the German already.
Goalkeeper is not a position where you can afford to rotate each week, and if Andy Lonergan steps in, it could be permanently.
If Christiansen is not prepared to make that move yet, Wiedwald will be relieved, but faces a big fortnight over the international break to prove himself to his boss.
