Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been linked recently with making a big money swoop for Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Mourinho was confident of a £50 million swoop for the left-back.

United have since been linked to Ryan Sessegnon, while Luke Shaw has featured twice as a starter over the past month for the Red Devils, having not been involved previously.

Mourinho has a decision to make ahead of January then whether to try and raid Spurs, and his latest comments present him with a bit of a dilemma.

Ranting at Manchester City’s spending – which saw them buy Kyle Walker from Spurs and Benjamin Mendy from Monaco – Mourinho blasted the amount of money City splashed out on full-backs.

He was quoted by The Star: “Manchester City buy the full-backs for the price of the strikers. The sum of £300m is not enough. And the price for the big clubs is different from the other clubs.”

Now Mourinho has to make a choice. Does he join City, and splash out on £50 million Danny Rose, or does he decide on an alternative route?

Going for Rose could leave Mourinho criticised for being hypocritical if he joins City’s approach. Whether he cares, is another matter.

The United boss clearly wants to spend, but there are other areas of United’s squad he will have to address to, including central midfield, a winger, and another striker, and as much as he would love it, Mourinho won’t be given a blank cheque from the Old Trafford board.

Mourinho’s comments could be good news for Spurs if he wants to make a point, and continue to show City up for overspending.

But he also may be getting even more determined to buy a ‘top full back’ at all costs, and if United come crawling to Spurs, expect chairman Daniel Levy to try and make them pay over the odds, as he will be in a strong negotiating position.
