Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard is said to be a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.
Eric Dier has played more games for Tottenham Hotspur than any other player this season.
Whether as a holding midfielder, in the centre of a flat back four, or as part of a three-man defence, the England international is one of the first names on Mauricio Pochettino’s teamsheet.
While his versatility is perhaps his greatest asset, Dier must want to nail down a consistent role in the team, and three wins in a row since his return to Tottenham’s midfield suggests that is his best position.
Injury to Toby Alderweireld and suspension to Davinson Sanchez forced Dier into defence for the latter part of 2017, but transfer plans may be afoot that will relieve the 23-year-old of his cover duties.
The 25-year-old has 204 Bundesliga appearances to his name across spells at Gladbach, Hoffenheim 1899 and Werder Bremen, so would provide established back up to Alderweireld, Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen.
Dier will be a regular under Pochettino for years to come, but Spurs are a better team with him in midfield rather than defence, and the signing of Vestergaard should allow him a full-time transition to this position.
This greater consistency of selection will help Dier become even more important to Tottenham’s cause.
