Are Everton targeting the wrong Arsenal star? Danny Welbeck could be a better option than Olivier Giroud

Everton are reportedly keen on signing Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, but Welbeck could be a better option for them.

Ronald Koeman’s squad overhaul at Goodison Park is beginning to take shape, having spent well in excess of £100 million already this summer, and his work is still yet to be completed, if reports are to be believed.

According to the Mirror, the Dutchman is interested in signing Gunners striker Oliver Giroud, with a £20 million bid being readied for the Frenchman.

Whilst the potential benefits of bringing the 30-year-old to the club are obvious to see, the Toffees might just be targeting the wrong Arsenal striker, with Danny Welbeck also potentially available this summer.

The 26-year-old looks set to struggle for game-time at the Emirates this season, after Alexandre Lacazette’s big money move from Lyon, and a move away from the club this summer could be the ideal outcome for all parties concerned, and Welbeck in particular, what with the World Cup on the horizon.

The former Manchester United hitman has suffered terrible luck with injuries over the past twos seasons, but is now back to his best, both physically and mentally.

With his blistering pace, he would inject a much needed level of urgency into Everton’s attacking play, and his ability to operate anywhere along the front-line would surely be an attractive prospect to Koeman, as opposed to Giroud’s very much one-dimensional offerings.

Arsene Wenger is still a big fan of Welbeck, so he may be reluctant to sell the striker, although a loan deal may very well be the ideal solution.

And if the Toffees’ boss manages to bring the England international to Merseyside, it would put the cherry on the cake for their transfer activity, and make his squad a truly complete one.
