St Mirren left-back and former Rangers youngster Thomas O’Ware was impressed by the performance of Declan John in the weekend’s friendly clash.
St Mirren defender Thomas O’Ware admitted that he was very impressed with Rangers left-back Declan John during the weekend’s behind-closed-doors friendly at Auchenhowie.
Kenny Miler stole the show with a goal, marking his return to first-team duties after a dispute with manager Pedro Caixinha but it was the performance of a Cardiff City loanee that caught O’Ware’s eye.
“I liked the look of Rangers full-back John,” O’Ware told the Daily Record of the 22-year-old, who netted twice against Hamilton in The Gers’ last league outing. “He was very quick and nippy going down the channel and did very well.
“He was the pick of the Rangers players on show. I was very impressed with his performance.”

And you cannot rule out the prospect of O’Ware battling John for the left-back berth at Ibrox in the future – which makes the St Mirren man’s comments all the more intriguing.
24-year-old O’Ware started his career in Rangers’ academy, spending five years with the Ibrox giants before moving onto Kilmarnock. And the Daily Record reported that Rangers, as well as Old Firm rivals Celtic, were interested in bringing the highly-rated defender back to Glasgow in the summer.
O’Ware, a left-back who can also play at centre-half and reached double figures for goals last season, could be seen as a potential long-term successor for the ageing Lee Wallace in Rangers’ squad.
And he and John could provide Rangers with real youthful talent on left – that’s if John maintains his excellent start at Ibrox and earns a permanent deal when his Cardiff contract expires in the summer.
