Last night Charlton Athletic moved 13 points clear at the top of League One after a comprehensive away win at the b2net Stadium.
The Addicks thrashed Chesterfield 4-0, with a hat-trick from Bradley Wright-Phillips, and fans could be forgiven for expecting that a return to the Championship next term is already done and dusted.
Manager Chris Powell, arguably a Charlton legend in his own right has been in his position for over a year now and it seems as though the club have finally found the right man to steer them towards where supporters believe they belong – The Premier League.
The South London outfit were only languishing in the third tier when Powell took the reigns so seeing as they are now sitting comfortably at the top of the table it is quite impressive.
Considering that this is Powell’s first managerial role (although he managed Leicester City for ONE game which they won), it is an even greater achievement for the five-time capped England defender.
Since things started to go wrong after Alan Curbishley quit and Charlton’s relegation from the Premier League back in 2007 and the Championship in 2009, the club has employed no less than four managers.
But now with Athletic in their third season in League One, it looks as though they are finally moving in the right direction.
In 2011, Norwich City became the first team to win successive promotions from the third to the first year of English football since Manchester City in 2000, and Southampton are looking good to repeat the feat this year.
With Chris Powell at the helm at the Valley, who would bet against them becoming the next team to do so?
Do you think Charlton could win back-to-back promotions?
