Should Celtic pick Jack Aitchison in their Champions League qualifier?

Celtic face a huge tie this week when they take on Rosenborg in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier.

They drew 0-0 in the first leg with a lack of strikers costing them dear. Moussa Dembele is injured while Leigh Griffiths was suspended.

BBC Sport report Griffiths is expected to overcome an injury of his own to feature in Norway.

The glaring absentee from Rodgers’ plans is talented striker Jack Aitchison.

Aitchison scored on his debut for Celtic at just 16 and scored, but has struggled for opportunities since.

The 17-year-old has scored prolificly at youth level for Celtic and this tie would be an opportunity for him to sink or swim.

Two seasons ago Manchester United were in a similar predicament, without five of their first choice options, they turned to unheard of talent Marcus Rashford for a do or die Europa League match.

Rashford scored twice in the win over Danish side FC Midtjylland and never looked back, overturning a first leg deficit and going onto score a double in his next league match.

He is now regarded as a key player in United’s first choice XI and is expected to go with England to the World Cup.

But without that injury crisis and show of faith from Louis van Gaal, he never would have been given a chance.

There is a lot at stake for Celtic this week and throwing Aitchison in would of course be a risk, but they are starved of options if Griffiths is unavailable, or they want a spark off the bench.

Aitchison could relish the opportunity to become a hero.
