Middlesbrough turned down a £15m offer from Leicester for Gaston Ramirez in January. Now they can’t get rid of him.

A lot can change in football over the course of a few months, but the decision for Middlesbrough to reject a £15m offer for Gaston Ramirez from Leicester City is now looking like a costly one.

The Gazette reports how on deadline day in the January transfer window the Foxes made an attempt to land the attacking midfielder, only for Boro to turn down the bid because they thought Ramirez would be key in their quest for Premier League survival.

As it was the North East side were relegated with two matches left to play and the Uruguayan had become sidelined at the Riverside after a string of poor performances and then being sent off in a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The Leicester Mercury then reported in June that Ramirez has now been deemed surplus to requirements at Middlesbrough and was even offered to Leicester for the reduced price of £10m – which they declined to take up.

Now the man who was once considered one of Boro’s key men in the mission for staying in England’s top flight is starting to become an expensive burden.

This is highlighted by the fact that talkSPORT says reports from Spain claim Ramirez has turned down the chance to join Real Betis because he does not want to take a pay cut.

For now, at least, it seems Garry Monk may have to start thinking about finding a place in his squad for the 26-year-old.
