David Unsworth is now the hot favourite to take charge of Everton – and he has the backing of Bill Kenwright too.
From Marco Silva to Carlo Ancelotti, Sam Allardyce to Guus Hiddink and now even Diego Simeone, the list of managers that have been linked with the vacant managerial job at Everton is long and increasingly varied.
Though with the likes of Sean Dyche, Silva and Ancelotti seemingly running themselves out of the race, and Simeone looking unlikely to say the least, all the signs now seem to be pointing towards one man; David Unsworth.
The caretaker boss is now the odds on favourite – and The Mirror is also reporting that Bill Kenwright would prefer to appoint Unsworth over former England manager Allardyce, who continues to distance himself from taking over at Goodison Park.
If the fortnight after Ronald Koeman’s sacking gave Unsworth an audition to prove he was good enough to get the top job, the former Toffees defender looked to be floundering.
A defeat to Leicester City at the King Power sandwiched losses against Chelsea and Lyon which knocked Everton out of both the EFL Cup and Europa League.
A dramatic fightback against Watford on Sunday afternoon, however, Leighton Baines’ stoppage time penalty claiming a 3-2 win from a 2-0 deficit, was arguably the best Everton have played all season long.
And Baines himself lavished praise on Unsworth after the game, describing his motivational talk before the game as something ‘special’, as reported by Sky Sports.
The fact is that last season’s Premier League 2 winning manager probably wouldn’t be set for the top job if Dyche, Simeone or Ancelotti had made themselves available.
Though, by hook or by crook, Unsworth now appears to be the runaway frontrunner.
