Gary Lineker has revealed on BT Sport that Liverpool’s players asked for the music to be turned up loudly at Anfield before kick off last night to try and create an atmosphere.
Liverpool took on Real Madrid yesterday, and knew that their task of overturning a 3-1 deficit without fans was always going to be difficult.
Anfield is famed for its atmosphere on European nights, and if Liverpool fans were in the stadium they would surely have been roaring their side on.
But with nobody in attendance, Liverpool’s players still wanted to make the game feel like a special occasion.
Chart music and Liverpool chants were, therefore, played loudly over the tannoy system before kick off.
And Lineker said: “They have cranked the music up, so it was hard to hear what you were saying Steve, but that is apparently at the Liverpool player’s request. They want to get some sort of atmosphere in the ground.”
Michael Owen was then asked whether the strategy made sense, and he responded: “It does in a way, they’re used to the atmosphere here, that’s their trump card. It’s not going to fill the void of the fans, but you hear a bit of music and it gets you pumped up.”
Unfortunately for Liverpool, the pre-match soundtrack was not enough to inspire them to victory.
Liverpool did make a fast start, but Mohamed Salah squandered their best opportunity when he shot straight at Thibaut Courtois in the Madrid goal.
It was the story of the night, as Liverpool created plenty of opportunities but just could not finish them.
And ultimately Jurgen Klopp’s side could only pick up a 0-0 draw in the contest.
