Aston Villa CEO, Christian Purslow, has told BBC Sport that Liverpool as a club shouldn’t be punished by the actions of a ‘small number of executives’ within the club.
It has been one of the most remarkable weeks in English football history, and unfortunately for Liverpool, they are at the heart of the mess.
Whilst Liverpool have now pulled out and apologised to their fans for their recent actions, it’s something that won’t be forgotten by the supporters.
And Purslow, who was on Liverpool’s board before FSG took charge of the club, slammed the actions of a select few.
“I am really saddened and appalled really at the role of Liverpool in this latest development,” said Purslow.
“The owners knew when they bought Liverpool through their due diligence process what they were buying into. A wonderful club. A huge global fanbase. Membership of a league of 20 teams. One club. One vote.
“A merit-based system that if they finish in the top four they qualify for the Champions League. A club in which they have a tremendous history. That’s been incredibly successful for those owners for the last 11 years.
“But now they want to change the rules to make it even more successful and profitable for them – I don’t think we should tarnish whole clubs with the actions and views of a small number of executives within those clubs.”
The biggest problem facing the Liverpool owners and board members is the reaction from their own fans.
Even though the Premier League title and the Champions League trophy has been delivered under John Henry’s ownership, his recent actions won’t sit well with the fans.
And it’s pretty clear, just like those at Old Trafford and at the Emirates, he might not last long in his role as owner.
