Divock Origi missed a glorious chance to propel himself back into the hearts of Liverpool fans on Thursday night.
The Reds slumped to a 1-0 defeat by Burnley last night for what was their first loss at Anfield in the Premier League for almost four years.
But it could – and should – have been so different for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side certainly should have went into the break with a one-goal lead but Origi spurned the best goalscoring opportunity of the half after hitting the bar after being put clean through.
This was the Belgian striker’s first Premier League start of the season and given his heroics in the Champions League campaign of 2018-19, he still has a lot of supporters within the fanbase.
But that miss, combined with Ashley Barnes’s late penalty, means that some Liverpool fans might be getting fed up with the former Lille hitman.
And Graeme Souness, speaking live on Sky Sports, has given a pretty blunt assessment of the 25-year-old, who cost £10 million in 2014.
He said: “Anyone but him, really, if it had been any of the normal front three. I know he’s got some important goals for them, but I did say to you, as he was going through that he’s not gonna score here. His first touch is great, second touch great, gives himself time to open the body up and he’s missed it.”
It’s so rare that Klopp starts Origi in a competitive game and, without sounding harsh, perhaps last night is a big reason as to why.
