He now faces an anxious wait over the ankle injury as the Liverpool medical staff assess his injury.
Under-21 coach Michael Beale told Liverpool’s official website: “We are now hoping Matty’s injury isn’t too serious because he has been excellent for us.”
Virtue is a midfielder who cites his idol as Xabi Alonso, and is just 18-years-old.
He has been a regular for the under-21 side this season since October, playing mainly in central midfield but also filling in at right-back and left-back.
Liverpool won the game with Middlesbrough 2-1 thanks to a brace from winger Sheyi Ojo, one of which was a penalty.
Their side featured goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, along with senior players Tiago Ilori, Jon Flanagan, and the rarely seen Jose Enrique all starting at the back.
The Reds’ under-21 side are currently in eighth position out of 12 teams in their division, with five wins from 15 games this season.
