Anwar El Ghazi has apologised to Aston Villa fans on Twitter after the Championship outfit were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the second round by League One side Burton Albion.
A mistake in Villa’s midfield saw striker Liam Boyce race through on goal and his deflected effort bounced into the net beyond Atletico Madrid loanee Andre Moreira.
Villa earned a late penalty as Kyle MacFadzean blocked a goal-bound effort with his arm, but substitute goalkeeper Harry Campbell, who came on after half an hour to make his debut, saved Albert Adomah’s penalty before blocking the rebound.
El Ghazi remained on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes, but failed to provide the difference as Steve Bruce’s side went four games without a win after three consecutive draws. He reacted on Twitter, apologising to fans.
The pressure has increased on manager Steve Bruce, who is expected to guide Villa towards the top six of the Championship table this season and gain promotion at the third attempt from England’s second division.
Bruce and El Ghazi will be looking to bounce back from Villa’s loss to Burton on Saturday, as they travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United. A win could see them climb into third place, if Bolton fail to beat Preston away from home.
